Welcome to our Home Page We are independent, volunteer, hobbyist field researchers of Pacific Northwest History, with a focus on abandoned and historical railroad, mining, logging, ghost town, homestead & other historical sites. Our mission is to explore, discover, research, record and help to preserve these historical sites. We live in the states of Oregon and Washington and this is where most of our research is concentrated, but we sometimes operate in the expanded western region of the U.S. Our work is entirely voluntary, in our spare time and our research and discoveries are often passed along to local, regional or federal authorities in an effort to help preserve historical sites. We are not organized into an official group or club, but are simply friends who share the same hobby and experience in exploring history. Most of our discoveries can be viewed by clicking on one of the below links and reading our articles and viewing our photos and videos. You may note that some of our major pages have not been updated in many months or even years. This does not mean we have stopped exploring. Unfortunately time and commitments on other projects have made it difficult to update our websites and upload photos and information on a regular basis. But we promise that we will have updates and new stories and articles up in the near future. Please check back. This website augments our original website, www.brian894x4.com, and many links refer back to that website. Thank you for viewing our websites!
Active and Abandoned Railroads of the Northwest This section is the primary focus of this website and of Northwest Rail Research. In this section, you can read many dozens of detailed articles about various abandoned railroads in the Northwest, as well as articles about interesting active railroads in this area. This page is entirely focused on railroads with some emphasis on logging history, when it applies to our research and exploration of logging railroads and logging railroad sites, camps, etc. Last Update: 7-12-09
Exploring Abandoned Mines, Ghost Towns & Other Historical Sites This section is where most of our non-railroad related historical articles are located. Our primary focus for non-railroad sites, include abandoned mines, ghost towns, homesteads, pioneering sites, western historical sites, fire lookouts and any other historical sites of interest to us. Most often, we explore remote, abandoned sites, researching, exploring and photographing these sites to record their history and help preserve anything that may remain. Last Update: 8-2-09
Oregon Pacific Railroad The Oregon Pacific Railroad is a local shortline railroad that operates in the Greater Portland, Oregon area and is owned and operated by the family of Richard "Dick" Samuels. I am a volunteer for this railroad, student locomotive engineer/conductor and webmaster for its website. This is a fully operational freight railroad with two seperate divisions. This website is highly detailed and includes hundreds of photos and dozens of videos of this unique and special railroad operation. Last Update: 1-20-10
| Trestlewalker This website is operated by Matt Wolford and is a website about his explorations of primarily abandoned railroads, logging and mining history all over the Northwest. Matt is my historical site hunting partner, and has compiled hundreds of photos of many sites all over the Northwest, including many that are not shown on this page. Matt is currently based out of Washington state and many recent explorations focus on Washington, but his website is full of photos and information about Oregon sites as well. His experience in researching and exploring historical sites dates back to the early 1990s and he is a wealth of knowledge of local railroad history, with a specialty in logging history. | Field Research Unit, 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80 My primary field research vehicle is a 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80. This vehicle is highly modified, specifically for research outings into remote areas. The vehicle is built for self contained travel up to several weeks, but is most often used on weekend trips around the Pacific Northwest. This section discusses the build up of this vehicle and its many features, in detail. Last Update: 9-28-09 |
Origional Website, www.brian894x4.com www.brian894x4.com is my original website and is still fully intact. Many articles and sections on this website are actually linked directly to our original website where they are based. www.brian894x4.com also contains a few sections not linked to here, that are related to our interest in Toyota 4 wheel drive vehicles. So, please be sure to visit that website as well. Last Update: 7-12-09
